WINSTON-SALEM, NC –Elizabeth O. “Betty” Temple has been elected as the next Chair of the law firm Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice LLP. Temple, a long-time Womble Carlyle Corporate & Securities partner and head of the firm’s Public Company Advisors Team, will assume the top leadership role on January 1, 2016.
Temple will succeed Keith Vaughan, who will retire as Chairman at the end of 2015 after 14 years in the post. In her new role, Temple will lead the 14-office, 550-attorney firm, and she will guide the organization’s continuing focus on client service and strategic growth.
“Betty is known not only for outstanding client service, but also as a strong leader within the firm, having served on the Firm Management Committee and, more recently, having chaired the committee that crafted the firm’s strategic plan,” Vaughan said. “I very much look forward to working with Betty during the coming year as she prepares to take on this new role in 2016.”
Reflecting the firm’s commitment to serving clients on super-regional, national and international levels, Temple practices in Atlanta and Greenville, S.C. She counsels executive leaders of public and private companies around the U.S. on transaction-based growth strategies. Temple has more than 25 years of experience in arenas such as high-stakes mergers and acquisitions, securities, and corporate governance.
Temple has been named twice to BTI’s Client Service All-Star Team, a distinction reserved for fewer than 200 attorneys worldwide. “As an attorney, I advise senior management and boards of directors on strategies that will move the needle for their companies,” she said. “As Chair of Womble Carlyle, I will use those same skills and experiences to guide the firm and our clients toward even greater growth and success.”
Temple’s appointment represents a number of milestones for Womble Carlyle: She will become the youngest Chair in the firm’s 140 year history, the first Chair to be located outside of the firm’s original Winston-Salem office, and the first woman to lead the firm. Nationally, fewer than 10 percent of The Am Law 100 law firms are led by women attorneys, according to Law360.com.
“Over the years that Betty has been a partner at Womble Carlyle she has played increasingly important leadership roles,” said Vaughan. “Her election as the next Firm Chair will allow her to continue, indeed to expand, her contributions to the firm.”
Under Vaughan’s leadership, Womble Carlyle has added offices in Northern Virginia, Delaware, Baltimore, Charleston, Columbia and Silicon Valley. Vaughan also has spearheaded expanding the Firm’s relationship with Lex Mundi, the world’s largest association of independent law firms, with member firms in more than 100 nations. Vaughan currently serves as Chair of Lex Mundi.
“I am grateful to have been Chairman during such an exciting period of Womble Carlyle’s history,” Vaughan said. “We are confident that under Betty’s leadership, the firm will continue its tradition of extraordinary client service and the growth that it has enjoyed over the past three decades.”
