LEXINGTON, N.C.—Womble Carlyle Trial Consultant Dr. Sandy Donaldson contributed to a complete defense verdict for a firm healthcare client in a high-profile medical negligence case. The competition in the courtroom couldn’t have been more formidable, as the plaintiff was represented by former U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate John Edwards.
Sandy provided trial consulting assistance to lead defense attorney Tamura Coffey of Coffey Law PLLC. Sandy helped develop effective messages that would resonate with this particular jury. She also assisted with jury selection. Sandy worked on site in Lexington through most of the three-week trial to help fine-tune the defense in light of plaintiffs’ arguments.
“The message was focused on the continuous sequence of events that led to the death of the plaintiff – not one procedure, one moment in time. This message was powerfully delivered throughout the trial from jury selection, opening statements, witness testimony, to closings by Tamura,” Sandy said.
She also noted that Coffey provided outstanding legal counsel in helping the client earn a trial victory. In May 2016, a Davidson County Civil Superior Court jury ruled that the hospital was not negligent in the 2011 death of a former patient.
