Al has considerable experience in products liability matters after working at the firm for more than a decade on national smoking and health litigation.
Al Windham is an experienced products liability and mass torts attorney. As a member of Womble Carlyle’s FirmLogic team, Al advises tobacco industry clients on complex medical and scientific issues in national smoking and health litigation.
Al has extensive experience in formulating and developing medical defenses in multi-jurisdictional tobacco litigation. He has litigated cases in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. Al has substantial experience in all phases of discovery and trial preparation as well as expert witness development.
Al works closely with medical experts, discussing a variety of medical issues, including cancer, COPD, and stroke, and preparing these experts for deposition and trial. He consults with expert witnesses in various fields of medicine, including pathology, radiology, oncology, pulmonology, cardiology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, toxicology, and occupational medicine, and successfully defended these experts at deposition. Al works closely with nurse analysts, deciphering medical evidence and assessing defensive strategy.
In addition, Al has assisted trial teams and national counsel in other defense matters, including pharmaceutical (fenfluramine/dexfenfluramine) litigation, synthetic stucco/EIFS (exterior insulation finish systems) litigation, and polyester staple antitrust litigation.
